As the top executive at Highland Capital Management, people expect James Dondero to invest a great deal of time driving the company’s direction. He can’t take his eyes off the management of the firm. Billions of dollars in assets fall under Highland’s management. What does surprise people, however, is Dondero’s time spent supporting local Dallas philanthropies. Many nonprofit entities owe a great deal to Dondero, as his support helps them tremendously.
To assume business knowledge and philanthropic pursuits are exclusive of one another wouldn’t be an accurate assessment. Business skills translate to philanthropy. You must know what endeavors are most deserving of support and how to support them.
Otherwise, funds might not find their way to the right cause. It would be safe to say Jim Dondero made wise decisions when supporting various nonprofits.
And supporting philanthropic causes is not something new to James Dondero. During the early days of co-founding Highland Capital Management, Dondero made charitable giving part of the firm’s mission. His forward-thinking helped the local Dallas community in numerous ways. Many show appreciation to him for his efforts.
The Dallas Zoo, the Perot Museum of Nature and Science, and SMU’s Tower Scholars program reflect merely three recipients of Dondero’s and Highland’s support. The support usually comes through the Highland Dallas Foundation, Inc. As the name implies, this is a charitable wing of Highland Capital Management.
James Dondero also formed a strategic partnership with Linda Owen, former CEO of the Woodall Rodgers Park Foundation. The two helped organize a $1 million grant to the Family Place. The Family Place helps people suffering from family violence. Counseling and shelters are two of the services the organization provides.
James Dondero and his company provide much value to the Dallas philanthropic world. Without his assistance, many organizations might not be doing as well as they are.
