Shelton Haynes and His Team at RIOC Upgrade Youth Center to Fight Crime

Shelton Haynes, Vice President of Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation (RIOC), is one of the driving forces in the fight against crime. Mr. Haynes and his team have recently upgraded the Roosevelt Island Youth Center, a place that provides services for young people who are at-risk and need support. They are making a difference in the community by providing these kids with more opportunities to succeed than they ever had before while giving them a safe and inviting environment to learn, grow and thrive.

Why the Upgrade?

Research has shown that most crime among our youth happens between 2 and 4 p.m., which is the time when RIOC’s Youth Center is open. It has also been suggested that young people between the ages of 12 and 17 are more likely to become involved in juvenile crime if they live in high-crime areas and lack employment opportunities.

So, by upgrading the Youth Center to include a computer lab, music room, game room, STEM lab, learning kitchen, and lounge, RIOC is helping create a safer environment for our youth.

Shelton Haynes employed the services of contractors within the community to renovate this building. He wanted to help local businesses to flourish, so he made sure that 90% of the work was done by local contractors. The labor efforts of the team were immensely rewarding. They had a vision, made it real and now they’re seeing it come to fruition.

He also hired child care expert, Ana Medina, who gave great insights on the type of facility that will benefit the children. She helped create a program of after school, weekend and holiday activities.

Shelton Haynes also brought in his team from Roosevelt Island Operating Corporation to help execute all of these plans. He surrounded himself with people who have experience and passion for youth development to make sure that this project is a success.

From their efforts, they have created a nurturing environment where young people can go to learn new skills and share their experiences with others.
